SHOPPING FOR VINTAGE JEANS

I must confess, I’m a jeans girl. I have a modest collection that I wear and re-wear often.

The jeans I gravitate to most are my vintage Levi’s, most of which were purchased at Beyond Retro Garage sales. On a regular day Beyond Retro can be quite steep with their prices (in my opinion), with denim prices ranging between £35-£50 and sometimes more. However, every few months or so they hold a Garage Sale where you can shop their Warehouse for a fraction of the normal price. On these days you can find Levi’s Lee, Diesel and tonnes of other vintage denim brands for the sweet sweet price of £10!

TOP TIP

When buying vintage jeans, don’t worry too much about the perfect fit, I’d actually advise to go for bigger sizes, that way you can get them tailored to your body shape for the ideal fit.

Case in point- these 501’s. They’re actually a waist 30, which I thought was my correct size- apparently not. After getting home and trying them on I realised they were slightly too big on the waist, and not in a cool-slouchy-Solange Knowles kind of way, more in a when-I-bend-over-you-can-see-my-gluteal-cleft, kind of way.

I took them to my tailor who amended the waist, and now these have become my go-to pair.

To find really great vintage jeans I recommend searching in your local charity shops, thrift stores, car-boot sales, eBay, Depop and Etsy. Also, definitely keep your ears to the ground for garage sales!
